History and Development of the Danish Chinese Table Tennis Association

At the Danish Chinese Table Tennis Association (DKBTF), we promote the passion for table tennis with a core focus on health and happiness. Our association serves as a vibrant hub for training and exchange, enhancing communication within the local Chinese community while fostering deep friendship and sportsmanship with our Danish friends.

1997 The Pioneer Days

The roots of the association date back to 1997, when the first table tennis tournament for the Chinese community in Denmark was organized. The participants were mainly Chinese international students, embassy staff, and local top players. Although the competitive level was impressive, the community lacked a permanent training venue and a structured system at the time.

In the same year, Liu Mao, the current President and Head Coach of the association, arrived in Denmark. He began training and competing in clubs around Copenhagen and eventually became the first Chinese coach to teach in local Danish clubs. Over the years, Coach Liu forged strong friendships within the Danish table tennis community. Most notably, he formed a legendary doubles partnership with Niels Ramberg, the renowned veteran player and former chairman of the Danish Veteran Table Tennis Association. Together, they became an undefeated duo in the men’s 60+ veteran category, winning multiple national championships.

2015 A Historic Clash of World Champions

On August 17, 2015, through the joint efforts of Coach Liu Mao, Li Xiaoguang (Director of the Copenhagen Business Confucius Institute), and Lennart (owner of the Flying Tiger Group), a historic event took place in Copenhagen. A delegation of Chinese world champions, led by ITTF Honorary President Xu Yinsheng and featuring legends like Guo Yuehua, Chen Xinhua, and Ma Lin, visited Denmark. They played thrilling exhibition matches against Danish top players, including Michael Maze. The event was broadcasted by TV 2 Sport and attended by hundreds of political, diplomatic, and sports dignitaries.

2017 Official Establishment and the “DanHua Cup”

Following a successful one-year trial period of weekly training sessions at the Frederiksberg Hallerne, the Danish Chinese Table Tennis Association was officially founded on October 21, 2017. The inauguration was attended by around 50 guests, including officials from the Chinese Embassy, sponsors from Chinese enterprises, and representatives from Danish table tennis clubs. Liu Mao was elected as the founding President. Mr. Xu Yinsheng, the Permanent Honorary President of the ITTF, sent a special congratulatory message from China. To mark the founding day, the inaugural “DanHua Cup” Friendly Tournament (sponsored by AIR STORE) was launched, creating a new tradition of friendly rivalry and cultural exchange.

In December 2018, the association made its international debut by sending a Danish delegation to Madrid, Spain, to compete in the 1st European Chinese Amateur Table Tennis Invitation Tournament, successfully building ties with players across Europe.
